Pajaros Island<\/h1>\n

The Gulf of Nicoya is home to dozens of islands, each with unique features that make them well worth a visit.
\nIn the calm waters of the gulf, where there is hardly any swell, many tour operators take tourists and locals to explore these islands.
\nOn some islands, you cannot go ashore because they are nature reserves. However, you can observe them up close without disturbing the local wildlife.
\nI recently visited these islands, and one caught my attention: the small Isla Pajaros, located 3 kilometers southeast of Isla Muertos, near the community of Rio Grande.\n<\/p>\n

The Island<\/h2>\n

Pajaros Island\u2014or the Pajaros Islands, depending on the tide\u2014is a small islet covering less than 1 square kilometer. Yet it is home to dozens of bird species, including the brown pelican, the magnificent frigatebird, yellow-naped parrots, and various species of gulls.
\nWhen you pass by, you can see many birds perched in the sparse vegetation. Dry trees, cacti, and grass make up a landscape that resembles a desert.
\nRainfall is scarce for months on end, creating this rocky and arid environment.
\nAs might be expected under these conditions, most of the birds that live here feed on fish and other smaller animals such as snakes and lizards.\n<\/p>\n

How to Get to Isla Pajaros<\/h2>\n

\nThe only way to reach this island is by booking a tour. Although you could hire a boat in a coastal town like Paquera, Gigante, or Lepanto, it\u2019s best to go with a tour operator. This is because tour operators provide safer transportation, life jackets, and other basic safety measures.
\nSome tours depart from Puntarenas, while others leave from Montezuma. Since they operate almost every day, it\u2019s not necessary to book far in advance\u2014perhaps just one or two days beforehand
\nOne of these operators is Cocos Tours. You can find them on your favorite search engine using the term \u201cCocos Tours Costa Rica.\u201d We cannot provide a direct link to them because we are not affiliated with them.
\nYou can check with this operator to see which of the tours they offer visit Isla Pajaros, which will likely take you to other islands in the area such as Venado, Isla Muertos, Caballo, and San Lucas.<\/p>\n
