However, you can observe them up close without disturbing the local wildlife.<br \/>\nI recently visited these islands, and one caught my attention: the small Isla Pajaros, located 3 kilometers southeast of Isla Muertos, near the community of Rio Grande.\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.costaricasurfandsup.com\/sitio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/isla-pajaros-nicoya.webp\" alt=\"pajaros island in nicoya\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.costaricasurfandsup.com\/sitio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/isla-pajaros-nicoya.webp 1000w, https:\/\/www.costaricasurfandsup.com\/sitio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/isla-pajaros-nicoya-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.costaricasurfandsup.com\/sitio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/isla-pajaros-nicoya-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"surro\">The Island<\/h2>\n<p>Pajaros Island\u2014or the Pajaros Islands, depending on the tide\u2014is a small islet covering less than 1 square kilometer. Yet it is home to dozens of bird species, including the brown pelican, the magnificent frigatebird, yellow-naped parrots, and various species of gulls.<br \/>\nWhen you pass by, you can see many birds perched in the sparse vegetation. Dry trees, cacti, and grass make up a landscape that resembles a desert.<br \/>\nRainfall is scarce for months on end, creating this rocky and arid environment.<br \/>\nAs might be expected under these conditions, most of the birds that live here feed on fish and other smaller animals such as snakes and lizards.\n<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.costaricasurfandsup.com\/sitio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/isla-pajaros-nicoya-2.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.costaricasurfandsup.com\/sitio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/isla-pajaros-nicoya-2.webp 1000w, https:\/\/www.costaricasurfandsup.com\/sitio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/isla-pajaros-nicoya-2-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.costaricasurfandsup.com\/sitio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/isla-pajaros-nicoya-2-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"route\">How to Get to Isla Pajaros<\/h2>\n<p>\nThe only way to reach this island is by booking a tour. Although you could hire a boat in a coastal town like Paquera, Gigante, or Lepanto, it\u2019s best to go with a tour operator. This is because tour operators provide safer transportation, life jackets, and other basic safety measures.<br \/>\nSome tours depart from Puntarenas, while others leave from Montezuma. Since they operate almost every day, it\u2019s not necessary to book far in advance\u2014perhaps just one or two days beforehand<br \/>\nOne of these operators is Cocos Tours.
